Book Workshop: Children’s Rights in Child Welfare Removals

Last week, DIPA hosted a two-day workshop in Bergen for contributors to an upcoming edited volume on child welfare removals. The volume is edited by Professor Marit Skivenes, Professor Tarja Pösö, and Dr. Kenneth Burns, and brings together leading scholars from political science, law, and social work to examine key challenges in contemporary child protection systems.

The workshop provided a platform for contributors to present and discuss draft chapters, with each session combining short presentations and in-depth discussions. The conversations focused on how child protection systems balance competing considerations in decisions on child welfare removals and out-of-home care, and how these tensions unfold across different institutional and national contexts.

Bringing together an international group of contributors, the volume aims to advance comparative perspectives on child welfare interventions and deepen understanding of decision-making processes in child protection systems.

The workshop was held from Thursday, 19 March to Friday, 20 March at the University of Bergen. The volume is currently in preparation and will be published in 2027 by Policy Press. More information will be shared once it becomes available.
